KUALA LUMPUR: Although Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the allies in Pakatan Harapan (PH) allied themselves with the new move naming Warisan President Shafie Apdal as the opposition coalition's prime minister, the move was rejected by PKR.
The party's youth wing insisted on naming the PKR President Anwar Ibrahim as the PM's candidate if the coalition succeeded in returning to Putrajaya.
"PKR Youth still adhere to the previous PKR Central Council (MPP) decision, saying that our only choice is Anwar as prime minister," said PKR Youth secretary Ahmad Syukri Ab Razak.
Syukri said PKR could not prevent its allies, namely Amanah and DAP from supporting Mahathir by electing Shafie as its prime ministerial candidate, warning party leaders to prioritize PH's joint decision.
“We cannot prevent Amanah and DAP from making their arrangements. However, we hope that the DAP and Amanah will prioritize the decision and stand at the Pakatan Harapan level,” he said.
Yesterday Mahathir announced his proposal to nominate Shafie as candidate for the opposition coalition backed by Amanah and DAP leaders.
However, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng later said the proposal had not been discussed at their party level or the PH Presidential Council.
Mahathir said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his son, who is also former deputy president of the PPBM, Mukhriz Mahathir, would be nominated as deputy prime minister in Shafie's government.
He claimed that if the opposition coalition named Anwar as the prime ministerial candidate, it would be difficult for them to return to power.
